Factors to consider when design your project with VIG
HaanGlas has received many inquiry,and found many designers and architects don’t have basic acknowledge of vacuum insulating glass,and design the facades and windows same as normal glass,here we summarize some misunderstanding of vacuum glass and hope architects follow during design steps.

1.Exposed edge vacuum glazing.
As we all know that there’s yellow color glass edge in HaanGlas VIG,which is processed with silk screened sintering silver conductive paste which has similar thermal expansion modulus with the metal and help the permanent bonding between glass and the metal materials.That’s the reason why color is hard to be customized.

When glass been applied in exposed edge glazing,customers prefer traditional black edge,which is more beautiful and same color as structural sealant.
Answer: Vacuum glass is not suggested to be applied as exposed edge vacuum glazing.
- All low-E coating around glass edge is removed ,edge thermal conductivity is almost 10 times that of glass center,in addition that black edge easier to absorb heat and will bring up thermal breaks caused by temperature breakage.
- The glass edge cannot be further processed to be black color.
Solutions:
- Make it hybrid vacuum insulating glass – low-E+12A+VIG and hide vacuum glass inside will make it avoid thermal break and also glass achieve black edge color.
- Cover glass edge with black color aluminium profiles,but this will cause increased costs and edge thermal conductivity.
2. Vacuum glass Min &Max size
Even though HaanGlas is able to produce Max 1700*3200mm vacuum glass,but for machine limit reason,we cannot realize mass production.Recommended max size for orders are 1500*2500mm.
Minimum size:300*300mm,this is decided by the roller distance in relevant machines:washing machine,tempering furnace.
3.Vacuum glass with triple silver low-E
Triple silver low-E are popular in North America&Europe,it can not only help decrease vacuum glass U value ,but has lower SC and SHGC value to transfer solar light to cool light.Typical triple silver low-E coating include Solarban 70XL,Solarban 90XL.

In theory HaanGlas is able to produce triple silver low-E VIG,while there’re many details to avoid scratch in cool processing -cutting&edging process,and ensure absolute flatness during tempering process,as well as short time from cutting to final VIG to avoid coating oxidization.

4.Hybrid vacuum insulating glass.
Hybrid vacuum glass contains one more piece body tinted glass,low-E coating,clear glass to make it vacuum insulated glass,or vacuum laminated glass,below table shows clearly the parameter difference.

Adding extra glazing will decrease overall light transmittance and U value,as well as SC and SHGC,while extra costs is lower than USD20/SQM.Edge thermal conductivity can also decrease much benefiting from warm edge spacer and argon gas inside .
If vacuum glass is applied in glass facade,it’s highly recommended to use hybrid vacuum glass to achieve the perfect combination of thermal conductivity and safety.
