Vacuum glass combination -Hybrid Vacuum Glass

The reasons why architects and facade designers prefer vacuum glass is its strong thermal insulation performance and thin and light,it can replace most insulated glass panels with simple 6.3mm,8.3mm,10.3mm vacuum insulating glass with standard double silver low-E coatings, while through changing the VIG combination,VIG application can be further extended.

  1. Monolithic panels.

Most VIG manufacturers offers standard panels-Clear VIG with dual silver low-E coating, fixed coating, fixed thickness, fixed performance ,Haan offers more options and makes VIG more different.

  • Float glass.

Same as insulated glass, the glass substrate can be clear, low iron, Grey (crystal grey, euro grey),F green, Bronze (Euro bronze, golden bronze),Blue (Light blue, Ford blue) etc.

Note: It’s suggested to apply low-E coating on body tinted glass directly to have the best performance, especially for hot areas such as Southeast Asian,Middle East regions.

Tinted glass+ clear low-E will cause higher SHGC.

Clear low-E +tinted glass ,the glass reflective color will be the low-E reflective color ,not the tinted color.

  • Low-E coating.

Low-E coating was original developed for insulated glass to help decreasing insulated glass U value from 2.7W/m2.k to 1.6W/m2.k (6+12A+6 standard insulated glass panel), and light transmittance varies from 20%-80%.

The low-E coating can also been used in vacuum insulating panels, to control light transmittance and SC.

Single silver low-E & pyrolytic low-E is not suggested to be applied in VIG as its price is USD3/SQM lower than dual ones, while the final U value is 0.2-0.3W/m2.k higher, and SHGC is also 30% higher, considering VIG lifetime reach 25 years and even longer,it’s not worthwhile to save this initial cost and ignoring its future up to 25 years continuous energy saving,

Triple silver low-E coatings such as Solarban 70XL,Solarban 90 also is perfect options, especially high LSG value (higher SHGC value under same light transmittance) ,but as triple silver low-E coating production is difficult and VIG require small overall bow and local bow to ensure evenly strength and high finished glass ratio, VIG panels with triple silver low-E coating is not available now.

Available dual low-E coating manufacturers include CSG ,XYG,TG,SYP,Jinjing etc, with light transmittance varies from 40% -80 % to suit different climate requirement.

  • Additional treatment

Beside normal glass, there’re more additional more treatment on glass surface to make it more functional.

1.Self-cleaning treatment.

When applying VIG on facade or glass roof/glass skylight, keeping exterior panel cleaning is expensive and heavy works, applying self-cleaning coating on glass surface can ensure up to 10 years worry free cleaning.

2.Silk screen process.

As most VIG panels has high LT (60% or more) ,for glass spandrel, glass canopy, applying silk screen on glass, whether it’s dots, stripes, or fully printed to hide the concrete or decorate glass, and even prevent bird hitting glass.

Silk screen glass has decorative function, white stripes can also prevent bird hitting windows

3.Digitally printing.

Digitally printing brings more color and more possibility to glass surface. With Dip-tech digital printing solutions, especially when combining with lighting in the building, digital printing will make your facade unique.

4.Acid etch / Sandblasting

Acid etching process makes glass translucent and protect your privacy.

5.Fireproof glass.

Single piece high borosilicate glass has much different component and performance as normal glass, tempered high borosilicate glass can stop fire for up to 120 minutes and protect your property.

  1. Laminated Vacuum Glass.

Even though tempered vacuum glass is tempered safety glass, and VIG equivalent thickness is 80% that of total thickness, this gives customers and end users full protect, while in some special applications, glass roof, glass facade that need higher strength and don’t expect “glass rain” happens when tempered glass broken, laminated vacuum glass is ideal option.

Because the sealing process is finished under high vacuum and high temperature (around 250 ℃)condition, which is far more higher than the PVB melting point,so laminated vacuum glass must laminate the vacuum glass and monolithic glass.

Because of the extremely low thermal conductivity, the PVB interlayer that contact VIG is difficult to be heated to the required temperature for laminating, finally the problem is solved and now laminated VIG is possible.

Higher safety, higher acoustic performance,UV blocking is extra benefits of laminated VIG.

Some special interlayer for example :

  • Thermochrimic interlayer: Control SC automatically according to the sunlight.
  • Solutia DG41 structural interlayer, structural glass application.
  • Vanceva colorful PVB interlayer, make your facade and glass more colorful.
  • Acoustic PVB interlayer, further increase glass acoustic performance.
  • Printed PVB interlayer: Print any pattern on glass surface to make it decorative glass.

  1. Insulated Vacuum Glass.

Actually the combination of adding extra insulated panel to VIG doesn’t help much in decreasing the U value further more, the main aim of this special combination is to fit the windows frame.

As most thermal break aluminium windows,or other similar type window frame system, always include thermal break (Nylon) or other materials which makes frame thickness over 60mm.

Windows used in passive houses are usually over 100mm thick to guarantee its extremely low thermal conductivity and waterproof, soundproof performance. As vacuum glass is just 6-10 mm thick, insulated vacuum glass is widely used in passive house windows to fit the thick frame.

  4.Cons of VIG

As vacuum space should be sealed inside the VIG,which means that VIG panels cannot be made into complex shape and special processing, this problem cannot be solved in short time and may not been solved in next decades, including:

  • Holes,Noteches
  • Curved glass
  • Structural glass

Rectangle shape VIG panels can fulfill most requirement.
